Spurry dabbed his forehead with a handkerchief. Oats, who stood with his brother, who was all in black, showed earnest concern on his face. “Are you well, Captain Spurry?”

“Quite well, thank you. A touch of fever is all.”

Spurry collected himself as Privet moved faithfully to his side, as if to guard him from internal threat as well as external.
